Surprising Facts About Native Advertising

Blog post on contribusource.com

It's easy to talk about the perks of native advertising. We've discussed in the past how it allows consumers to discover sponsored content organically without using flashy, in-your-face tactics. We could go on and on about how amazing it is. But where's the proof? Some people have to see real numbers to be convinced.

Check out these stats that prove how effective native advertising can be.

1.) The native advertising industry is expected to read over $4 billion in revenue in 2017. That's a lot of money! If you measure effectiveness in dollars, that's pretty darn effective!

2.) 70% of users would rather discover products through content than through traditional advertising. Considering how people — particularly millenials — hate being sold to, this stat isn't too shocking. Display ads are pretty recognizable for what they are. Native ads use content to engage customers in a more natural way.

3.) Native ads are viewed 53% more frequently than traditional display ads. We knew they were effective, but that large of a difference took even us by surprise.

4.) Where only 19% of surveyed customers said they would share a traditional ad with friends, a whopping 32% said that they would share a native ad. That a customer would take the time to recommend this type of sponsored content to a loved one says a lot about the power of native advertising.

5.) Native advertising can increase brand lift by as much as — get this — 82%. That's a huge difference, and one of the biggest reasons we believe so strongly in this industry.

If these stats have blown your mind, take a moment to explore Contribusource.com to learn how our ads can help you achieve these fabulous results.

Why Millennials Prefer Native Ads

Blog post on contribusource.com

The millennial generation has grown up in a fast-paced, ever-changing world. They're wise to most marketing strategies, and know when they're being sold something. They've grown used to tuning out ads and, in many cases, they utilize apps to block them entirely. Put simply, this generation is any marketing executive's nightmare.

And yet, they're also one of the most targeted and important demographics. Just coming into adulthood, they're a large percentage of the population with a huge amount of spending power. This, coupled with an ingrained distrust of marketing tactics, has made them a challenge for both established and growing companies. Fortunately, native advertising may be the answer.

Native ads blend in with established content to attract consumers with similar interests. Advanced algorithms help companies target key audiences, so the ads go to the people who will respond best. For millennials, this natural placement is far preferable to an in-your-face banner with bright colors or flashy animation — because that just looks like you're trying too hard.

A study by the native ad platform Adyoulike showed that ~57% of millennials will visit ad content that's relevant to them, even if they know it's an ad. It went on to discover that the preferred type of sponsored content was written feature articles, followed by list-based articles (listicles), and then videos. It's not that marketing professionals are tricking millennials into looking at their content -- they're good at recognizing ads. This generation is just wants companies to give them a good reason to consider their products. Now that they spend so much time using online platforms, they just want to spend their time with content that is engaging and interesting to them — whether or not it's paid for.

Adblock Plus's head of operations, Ben Williams, comments: “This survey demonstrates...that millennials are interested in online ads so long as they are served non-intrusively. Online users want good content – content that is interesting to them – and they are just as interested when this content is paid-for, so long as they feel in control."

Consider these other stats:

  •     Millennials prefer ads that don't disrupt the user experience; 64% of those surveyed said that they use adblocking software     because they don't like ads that are disruptive or cause clutter

  •     1 in 5 millennials say that they exclusively read headlines

  •     91 percent of millennials discover content while browsing feeds

  •     80 percent of Millennials say in-feed native ads are a good user experience

Our takeaway from all this data is that native advertising is the best way to serve millennials content that leads them to your brand without disrupting their user experience. We're not saying that we've found the perfect way to market to millennials — but we're not NOT saying it, either!
